The Crawfordsville Fire Department provides fire
protection and emergency medical services to the City of Crawfordsville and
Union Township in Montgomery County Indiana. In addition, the department
provides mutual aid assistance and advanced life support intercept services
to surrounding departments and communities in west central Indiana. The
department has a long, proud history of service to the community. It was
established in 1869 after a major fire destroyed a block of the downtown and
several businesses. The department began as a subscription based service
known as the “Niagara Fire Company” and was later incorporated into city
government, becoming tax supported and municipally controlled.
Unfortunately, providing such protection to the community has come at a
steep price. Three Crawfordsville firefighters have paid the ultimate price,
losing their lives in the line-of-duty. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was
incorporated into the department by the mid 1900’s, and the department
became one of the founders of fire service based EMS. Today the
Crawfordsville Fire Department is staffed by 38 firefighters and paramedics.
They staff 2 fire stations and utilize 3 “Class A” Engines, an 85’ aerial
platform unit, a tanker/pumper truck, a brush truck, a heavy rescue truck, a
squad, and 4 advanced life support ambulances. The department also maintains
2 command vehicles and a boat. All personnel are cross trained in
firefighting and EMS duties. There are 4 major divisions within the
department: fire suppression, emergency medical services, inspection/code
enforcement, and training. The department responds to approximately 3,000
emergency calls per year, of which approximately 72% involve emergency
medical services or rescue. Much time is devoted to public fire education,
and approximately 900 fire prevention inspections are completed annually.
