Storm Water Utility
The Crawfordsville Storm Water Utility (MS4 - a Municipal
Separate Storm Sewer System) is responsible for making sure our community
complies with Rule 13 also known as the Federal Clean Water Act. Rule
13 is an effort by IDEM, the State's permitting authority, to manage the
storm water discharged from urbanized areas. Consistent with other
State water programs, this rule's goal is to protect human health, aquatic
life, and existing water resources. Storm water discharges, if
uncontrolled, allow hazardous wastes such as pesticides, motor oil, and
antifreeze to enter our waterways. Soil from erosion and other
pollution that end up in streams, rivers, and lakes have a profound effect
on our water quality.
MS4 is a conveyance, or system of conveyances including roads with drainage
systems, municipal streets, catch basins, curbs, gutters, ditches, man-made
channels or storm drains. For more information on MS4 view the links
to the left and the
MS4
Pamphlet. Other resources include
Indiana Department of
Natural Resources and the
Indiana Department
of Environmental Management.
