Waste Water
The Crawfordsville Waste Water Treatment Plant was
originally built in 1938 and consisted of two primary settling tanks. Plant
flows were designed to be treated at approximately 750,000 gallons per day.
The purpose of the waste water treatment system is to protect the receiving
waters, which in this case happens to be Sugar Creek. This protection of the
stream is accomplished by removing harmful substances from the sanitary
waste stream by employing biological treatment. The treatment plant was
expanded in 1964, 1978, and in 2000. The system is now capable of treating
4.7 million gallons per day and can currently treat an average of 3.01
million gallons daily. The City of Crawfordsville utilizes the beneficial
reuse program and land applies bio-solids to farm grounds twice yearly. The
Department employs 15 people that are responsible for the maintenance of
nearly 90 miles of collection lines, 14 lift stations, and the operations of
the treatment plant. Three of the employees also serve in the pre-treatment
division which is responsible for oversight of the numerous industries
located within the City.
