Fire Department
The Crawfordsville Fire Department (CFD) provides Fire Protection and Emergency Medical Services to the City of Crawfordsville and Union Township in Montgomery County Indiana. In addition, the department provides mutual aid assistance and advanced life support intercept services to surrounding departments and communities in west-central Indiana.
The department has a long, proud history of service to the community. Established in 1869 after a major fire destroyed a block of the downtown and several businesses, the "Niagara Fire Company" was created as a subscription-based service. The department was later incorporated into city government, becoming tax-supported and municipally controlled. CFD operates out of two fire stations. Station personnel consist of three shifts, each of those shifts operating on a 24-hour schedule.
It is the mission of the department to preserve life and property for our citizens, provide professional and compassionate service, promote public safety, and foster economic growth through leadership, management, and actions as an all-risk life safety response provider.
In the mid-1900's, innovative leaders in the department incorporated Emergency Medical Services (EMS) making Crawfordsville Fire Department one of the founders of fire service based EMS. Today, that tradition of innovation continues.
In January, 2017, the Mobile Integrated Health (MIH) Community Paramedicine Program was launched through a grant provided by the Indiana Department of Health. The award-winning program is nationally-recognized.
