Citizens Reminded Of Noise Ordinance As July 4th Nears

Crawfordsville City officials want to remind citizens that an amendment was passed last year concerning the regulation of noise associated with the use of fireworks as the Fourth of July holiday nears. This change was enacted in response to increasing complaints about fireworks noise from residents.  The ordinance can be found in Chapter 95 in the City Codes and the new amendment is 95.06.

The city ordinance now reads that it is unlawful for any person within a residential zone of the city to use legal consumer fireworks except during the following days and times:

  • Between the hours of 5 p.m. and midnight on June 29-July 3 and July 5-9.
  • Between the hours of 10 a.m. and midnight on July 4.
  • Between the hours of 10 a.m. on Dec. 31 and 1 a.m. on Jan. 1
  • Between the hours of 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. as part of the Chinese New Year’s Celebration on Chinese New Year’s Eve, Chinese New Year’s Day and three days following Chinese New Year’s Day.

Citizens in violation of this ordinance may face a fine of $100 for the first offense, $250 for a second offense and $500 for a third offense.

City officials urge the public to follow the noise ordinance concerning fireworks so all can enjoy the holiday season. These new standards will be enforced.
