CFD Opens New Station 2

CFD New St. 2

Crawfordsville Fire Department conducted a community open house Wednesday August 20th, 2017 at the newly opened Fire Station No. 2 located at 1509 E. Main St. For East-End firefighters, it was a long time coming.

The new Fire Station No. 2 opened for business in July, years after the city first began talking about the need for extra space to house crews and equipment. “It took a lot of people pulling to make this happen,” Mayor Todd Barton, a former fire chief, said as personnel began moving in.

The $4.8 million facility provides more square-footage to accommodate additional equipment and larger living quarters.

The station is more than 15 times larger than the former facilities, which the department had long outgrown.

The larger vehicle bays allows a third truck to be housed at the station. Trucks exit onto Main Street, with firefighters able to control the traffic light at the Englewood Drive intersection.

There is plenty of space to work on equipment and train for rescues.

Firefighters have an Expanded Kitchen, Fitness Room, Family Area and a Patio on the ground level. A Training Room is designed for multi-purpose activities and open to crews from Station No. 1, which has slightly smaller training facilities.

Each of the three shift Lieutenants have their own computer and office space. Upstairs are an eight-bed living quarters, which also boasts a lounge with a large screen TV.
